Doc Morgan’s musings

22 December 2017

Well, Christmas is around the corner. I asked Santa for a FLIR One Pro! This is a thermography device that attaches to your smartphone.  How cool will I be? I can use my new gadget to see where my bees are within their winter home.  The literature says that hives do not usually die during December…but I, like most beekeepers would like a little reassurance that some Queen and her court is at home.

Keep in touch. We shall see what Santa brings me. HoHoHo.

13 December 2017

Today is the day I consider True Winter is among us in the Northeast.

I put on Moisture quilt boxes on my two hives with two slabs of Winter patties sitting on top of the frames. It is now going to be too cold for the bees to go and get liquid food out of the top feeder. The top feeders are now just fancy cover weights.

I checked on my Southern Girls and they were doing just fine.

My Northern girls were quiet so I am sure they are snug in their hive.

Like all bee keepers, I will continue to look forward to the Winter Solstice….. that turning point where the day light starts to get longer!!!!!

Bee great today!!
